HB 30 Home Owner Exemption Passes Idaho House

I presented House Bill 30 on the floor of the House today. It passed without a dissenting vote. The bill now goes on to the Senate. HB 30 allows home owners to retain their property tax exemption while away from home for military, humanitarian or religious service. One constituent ran into a problem while he was away serving in the Peace Corps. He rented out his home to defray expenses, however, that triggered a loss of his exemption when the assessor determined that someone else was renting the home. The bill prevents such a loss of exemption as long as the home owner intends to maintain the home as the primary dwelling place. Safeguards against abuse are built into the bill.
