Tribal Peace Officer Deputization Bill Spawning Heated Debate in Idaho House

HB111 which would deputize POST trained tribal officers to arresting non-tribal members is under hot and divided debate. Safety issues on the reservation is key to the proponents arguments. Local control is the main argument on the opposing side. Counties vary in how they deal with this. Some having cross deputization agreements. Others get along with out. The county at the center of this tempest is Benewah county in North Idaho which had a cross-deputization agreement which was canceled over disputes between the county and the tribe. Debate is going on 2 hours now.
